Everyone has his or her own piano favourite, and to decide a greatest of all time is really something that comes down to personal choice. It is undeniable however that certain people have shaped the way we think of piano music, and subsequently music in general. So who are some of these key figures, and what exactly did they do?
If you're talking about the influence on modern music you're talking about jazz. Jazz piano had an incredible effect on music. It defined its age, and though it mostly burnt out with it,we have it to thank for the legacy of modern music types today. A key figure in creating this sound was Earl 'Fatha' Hines. His work while going from job to job in Chicago, including one job that landed him as Capone's star musician, not only helped make the jazz sound, but helped set up some of the other biggest stars in its firmament.
Art Tatum was a student of Hines. He came from a small city called Toledo, in one of the quieter, though industrialised, parts of Ohio. In his early life he was struck almost completely blind, but this didn't prevent him from picking up an incredible talent for music. From the churches of Ohio where he honed his talent he made his way to Chicago, the place where jazz was doing its thing. Tatum became probably the most skilled jazz pianist of all time, with a genius level of improvisation and a perfect ear for music.
If you go further back there are some obvious giants of the piano world too. Beethoven is a name that's become synonymous with creative potential of piano. This great man battled madness and deafness - both attributed to lead poisoning - to create some of the most memorable music of all time. Arguably the most memorable.
Early in history you find Bach as one of the most influential and creative piano and organ players ever to live. His songs share an instantly appealing quality and sense of emotion that characterises the very best of classical music.
There really are too many talents to talk about, but these figures are a great way to start looking at the great changes that have shaped piano music, and music in general, throughout history.
