New Line Cinema recently released a new Anthony Hopkins, branded thriller/horror film "The Rite" into movie theaters. I just watched it,and thought it was pretty good. It delivered a ton of intense exorcism scenes with actor Anthony Hopkins. It stars: Anthony Hopkins, Colin O'Donoghue, Alice Braga, Ciaran Hinds, and Rutger Hauer.
The film revolved around Michael and Father Lucas. Michael is a new Priest who has issues with his own faith. He doubts the Devil exists as well as these so-called Demonic possessions. The film often showed flashbacks to Michael's childhood where he first started to develop his faith issues when his father died.
Michael heads to Italy to study exorcism with Lucas because his teacher thought he might need to gain some deeper experience with exorcism since he doubted it so much. In just a few minutes after his arrival at Lucas' house,he gets his first introduction to a live exorcism with a girl who is pregnant, and goes in and out of possessions.
With very convincing evidence of possession,Michael still shows much doubt in the faith. The victim spat out nails, blood, her voice changed, she became an extreme contortionist, and all other kinds of weird stuff, but Michael still swore she just needed to see a psychiatrist because she's troubled.
Michael ends up dealing with major issues that are brought on by strange dreams he's been having about his dead father. Lucas tries to help him out with his issues. However, Michael gets his doubting faith put to the maximum test when the demon possesses someone he never thought it would, and if Michael doesn't get some faith quick, his life and other's lives are in great danger.
Michael and his female friend were in the room during the possession, and things get extremely bad. Finally, with his back up against the wall,Michael is forced to face the issues with his faith, and issues with God so he can overcome what is getting ready to kill him. The conclusion was quite intense and really had me on the edge of my seat wondering what was going to happen next.
I thought the film was quite entertaining and intriguing, but there were some slow moments during the movie where I found myself dosing off a bit. However, when things picked up,they picked up in a huge way. It featured a lot of strong, intense moments. The exorcism scenes were really disturbing and compelling. I gave the film a B grade.
