Why Children Find It Easier To Learn Piano Than Adults

by Shannon M. Singh

A child is in a constant cycle of learning right through their early years of life. A child's brain is set in learning mode right from birth through childhood up until they become an adult. A child is learning from the day they are born, from feeding themselves through learning to read and write to learning their subjects in school. The learning process carries on through the teenage years and to a point into adulthood, but not nearly as prevalent as during a child's formative years.

During the early years of a child's life they are more open to new experiences and naturally more interested in learning and storing new information. An adult on the other hand loses some of the ability to learn new things as their brain becomes 'lazy' with age.

If a child and an adult start to learn the same thing at the same time with no prior knowledge of the subject, say, a musical instrument or a second language one year on the child is likely to have remembered and held more of the information than the adult has.

Starting to learn to play a musical instrument like the piano is best done at a young age. The child will still be in learning mode and will therefore benefit a lot more from piano lessons than an adult would. Children have a natural sense of rhythm and structure which can be lost with age.

While an adult has many distractions in their life that may prevent them from becoming proficient in playing the piano, whereas a child can dedicate more time to developing a talent. Adults will focus on the end result of taking lessons and assume that being taught is enough but a child realises the importance of taking small steps to achieve a desired outcome.
