This is because they run a ratio based system where a user has to share in order to download.
People are starting to utilize this type of technology for downloading music, and people are also using this technology for their video downloads as well. Every type of file known to man kind is being seeded through the use of these websites. These services are making it very easy for smaller artists to share their work on a global scale.
With the classic P2P servers, there was typically just a very small handful of people that were sharing each of the files. Most people would wind in "queue" and never even get to start a download. These files are force shared in a lot of situations, and the most popular files will be shared by thousands of people from all over the world. The best that a P2P application could do on a good day was merely hundreds of users.
