Independent music today

by Scott Walker

New independent music and alternative music seems to be in a bit of a rut at the moment. There are some cool new bands, but not as great as the classics. Is there really a band out today that can top nirvana. Alternative songs like black hole sun were original yet influenced by classic rock. How many bands today will be round in a decade? Many of the popular groups and musical stars will bite the dust. Independent music and alternative music needs a new kick in the head. Perhaps a new exciting band is right around the corner that offers passion, originality, great songs and style. Many of the best new bands do not even have a recording contract. Many post their own songs on my space or facebook. If you check out many of the free up online music social media websites you might find a diamond in the heap.

Alternative music used to be interesting in the past few decades. The pop and MOR charts have always been to golden ticket and mainstay to record company sales but there was always an interesting alternative market for cool interesting bands. Just strolling down to your local alternative record shop you were able to find dozens of alternative bands pushing the envelope of new music. About the time of the late 60s decade alternative music began to emerge as new bands created weird sounds and concept records that defied description at the time. Even adventurous sounds by the Beatles and The Rolling Stones would be consider new alternative music now. Backward voices, odd production techniques and psychedelic song writing were all part of the scene before the term "alternative music" existed.

Since the turn of the century and the advent of the Internet, we have seen a number of notable changes in the music scene. If 'alternative' simply means 'different from what is in the mainstream charts' then the choice has become so immense that the term has pretty much lost all meaning. Every band has a website, a page on Facebook, Myspace, Bandcamp, Reverbnation, Soundcloud- the list goes on. So if you are looking for 'alternative music', where on earth do you begin? Even given several months of leisure time, you would hardly scratch the surface in terms of what is available. If anyone spends just a few hours surfing the net for new 'alternative' music, they will find that the vast majority of what they find sounds depressingly familiar. Styles are being recycled to such an extent that it is often hard to recognize a band as being contemporary or from the distant past. If there is a definitive sound of 2010, what is it? If one knew this, then anything different which doesn't sound boringly retro would perhaps qualify as 'alternative music'.

Contemporary singers like Nick Cave are one of the few music writers who a creating contemporary alternative and original music styles. He sometimes creates new music scenarios drawing from the past but in the end it is an original take on a form of music like folk, blues or alternative rock and roll. if you think about it artists such as Nick cave may have a hard time getting a record deal now as the climate for new and original alternative music artists is not really what is on a record companies mind. New pop stares like Lady Gaga may dominate the scene with visually stunning stage shows. She seems very fond of true alternative music stars and artists like Iggy Pop and David Bowie however, her music is tightly wound up in dance, house and modern pop, not alternative music.

Looking at the broader picture it would seem music is doomed to be either taken over by huge money making pop stars or swept under the carpet in the internet world of bands on myspace. The savior to alternative music may be the live music scene where concert tickets have risen in price to accommodate bands that do not sell millions of records. People still want to see and hear something different and yes even people who like Lady Gaga dig many of the bands she likes herself. Major record companies like Capitol, Universal have seen the growth of ticket sales flourish as kids want to experience some thing beyond their computer screen. Young people in their teens and twenties still dig Kurt Kobain and Nirvana, they understand the difference even if record companies just keep churning out products labeled alternative music.
